Our client came to Fitzgerald Architecture in Spring 2021 with the view to a self-build project to transform his bungalow. Located in a culs de sac in the built-up area of Everton the property dates from the mid 20th Century. Originally a single-story bungalow incorporating some modifications already constructed, the brief was to extend and rationalise the ground floor and add an additional floor in a replacement roof. The goal was to remodel the dwelling creating accommodation more suitable for the owner of the property who has a young family. The cellular layout of the bungalow is rearranged to provide a more efficient use of the spaces, a covered porch canopy provides weather protection at the entrance and the existing chimneys are removed. The replacement roof facilitates the new accommodation at first floor. Windows and doors are replaced in a more contemporary configuration with feature windows at the rear of the house taking advantage of the additional volume at the apex of the roof. Also, at the rear the designs take advantage of the southern aspect with large areas of glazing to allow solar gain and when weather permits the use of the outdoor space connecting with the house.
